What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean?
Mr. May is teaching in the new Discovery Lab. He wanted the class to draw and write a definition of what we think discovering means. This is what I think it is. I think discovering means to find something new. I also think discovering means finding something we already know about in a different place. For example, in my picture I am finding gold in a different place. That is what I think discovering means!

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?

I found a great, effective professional arcade game called Sphere Runner. The name of the creator is David Carachelo. The Sphere Runner, which is a submarine looking thing, is trying to go over the circles on the grid. You move the submarine by the arrow keys. If you get over all of the circles you win the level. Underneath the screen, where the game is displayed, also tells you how to play the game. For 1-4 rating I give it a 3.5 because the game can get challenging after a couple of levels. For example, a couple of levels in the grid does not have the grid, it has holes there, and you can only move on the grid. You can win the game by getting all of the displayed circles on the grid filled without being hit by the cannons. If you win the level you go to the next one. If you win the game it brings you right back to the beginning level.

To make this game handmade, I think you need cardboard, glue, graph paper, people to play the game, marbles, and string. To build this game I think it would cost $20-$40. To buy the handmade game it would cost $40. To build on the Internet it would cost $15-$25. To buy it online it could cost about $20-$25.

Design Brief
What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?
The name of our game is FLICK THE BALL. To play the game you try to flick the paper ball into the mouth on the box. If you miss the mouth there are three other holes that you could try to get it into and one is for 1 point, another is for 2 points, and the last hole is for three points. If you make it in the mouth all 3 tries you get 20 tickets, if you get it in 2 times you get 15 tickets and if you get 1 it time in you get 5 tickets. All the points are worth the number of tickets. The rules will be displayed on the side of the box. For our game we give it a 4 star rating out of a 1-4 star rating. You win the game if you flick the ball into the mouth on the box. When you get a certain amount of tickets you can get a small prize a medium prize and a large prize.

The blueprint of our game has a view from the side, top and front. Our blueprint shows a big box with a hat on the back of the box and the mouth would be connected to the hat, and there would be a ramp that you would flick the ball off. There would also be a ticket dispenser to get the tickets that you won.

To make this game by hand we would need a big box, markers, a hat, Sharpie, box cutter, paper, bottles, tickets, tape, bags, jars, and prizes. We think it would take about a week or less to build the game. A problem we would have is taping supplies to the game.

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?
Examiner: Mrs. Rottinghaus

Praise: Very fun, arcade game! Kids really enjoyed it! Love the ticket machine and prizes!

Question: Why do you put the coins in?

Polish: What do you do if someone flicks the ball over the game?

Student Comment: Thank you very much for coming to play Flick the Ball!! Thank you for saying kids really enjoyed Jordyn’s and my game and the ticket machine and prizes. Mr. May helped us with the ticket dispenser. The ticket dispenser used to be a phone box. Jordyn and I went out and bought the prizes at Five Bellow and The Dollar Tree. To answer your question about putting the coins in, we did it because we want it to be like a real arcade game, and it makes it more interesting!! To answer your question about what happens if the ball gets flicked over the game, either Jordyn or I would go get the ball. We would also give the players another try because we would know it was an accident.

Examiner: Ms. Waters

Date: 1/29/13

Praise: Very through in your explanation of how your game is played and player expectations. Love the built-in ticket dispenser! I was hooked from the minute I started playing.

Question: Did it take you 1 week to complete? How difficult was the construction?

Polish: No polish- great the way it is!

Student Comment: Thank you for the comments!! I appreciate that you gave time out of your busy schedule to play Flick the Ball. We tried to be as clear as we could when we typed the directions. We also had to think of where we were going to put the ticket dispenser because there was no place to really put it. So, we put it inside the game. To answer your question about how long it took to build the game, it took about 3 weeks to complete. To answer your other question about how difficult it was to build, the construction was a little difficult because we had trouble taping the tins and top piece part of the game to the whole game. We are very happy that you did not have any polishes because that is how we know we are doing a good job.

Examiner: Mrs. Koska

Date: 2/1/13

Praise: Love the game! It is addictive! Fun, fun, really wanted to get it in the person’s mouth.

Question: How did you come up with the game idea?

Polish: Maybe you could use a foam ball.

Student Comment: Thank you for the lovely comments about our game, Flick the Ball. I can believe it is addicting, everybody wants to get it into the mouth like you said!! Well, I came up with the idea of a flick soccer game but then I thought of a person and a mouth. Next Jordyn and I took a bunch of ideas, put them together; so it just all came along then!! For your polish, yes, we did change the ball, but not to a foam ball, to a different soft ball.

Make It Better
How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?
Reflection on Project

What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

I could make my arcade game better by making it bigger because I could not really fit in the box when we played ball in the truck. I could put more decoration on it so it does not look like a plain old box.

Specifically, how would we do this?

I could make my arcade game better by getting a bigger box or to get another box and attach it to the other one. I could make my arcade game better by adding more decoration like duct tape and different colors.

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

I learned that making an arcade game is not so easy to make it seems easy to make but it really is not. I also learned that you do not have all the supplies in the world you have to use what you have and you CANT USE A LOT OF TAPE you have to use the amount that is enough for each piece.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

I never knew that you could carve letters in a box because I thought it would be really hard to do that and I thought nobody would do that. I never knew that I could fit in the box when we were making it. I just knew that Nicholas could because he is smaller than me.

What can you do know that you couldn’t before doing this project?

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

A Final Reflection:

I think to make my arcade game, Target Mix, better is to get another box and connect it to the big one so I could fit in the game box. Nicholas could really fit in there because he is smaller than me, but when kids came and Nicholas was not here I could not really fit in there. To make my game better I would make a bigger cup for the basket so it would more realistic; I would also make a back board for basketball so it would be harder for people to make the basket. For using the ball in the truck I would be behind the game, make the trucks attached to the game from behind so I would be able to move it. The steps we took to make Target Mix were: first, we drew what our arcade game should look like. Then, we asked Mr. May if it was good and he said yes so we started to build. We did not build it in one class; we built it part by part. In every class we did one part, and if we had more time we did even more. At the end of building time we went to Mr. May. He checked it, and we were waiting for his answer - did we have to add more tape or were we good? He said it was good.
